Are we ashamed our natural beauty?

Is Relaxed the new natural? Is natural hair not beautiful anymore? Is straight now really the best hair to have?

Nowadays ladies give their daughters’ relaxers way too early. Giving your daughter a relaxer at age six is way too early their hair barely had anytime to grow out and see what their real texture is like. Relaxers comprise chemicals and creating scalps and hairlines are especially susceptible to damage when these chemicals are utilized to them. Unfortunately, because home relaxer kits are so easy and cheap to make use of, youngsters as younger as six years-old have been topic to them.

Relaxers can sting, burn and cause irreparable damage to a young child’s scalp and hair follicles (Sandeen 2). This results in sparse (or completely empty) hairlines. How many occasions have you seen a baby with a hairline that begins inches again from the place it ought to be? That’s the aftermath of a relaxer method to early.

I transitioned from relaxed to pure 3.

5 yrs, ago. It has been tough, rewarding, and attention-grabbing. I didn’t do the “big chop” and don’t understand why persons are suggesting such a drastic measure to start the natural hair journey. I used the same shampoo, condition, blow dry, flat iron, and wrap approach throughout my transition and have used it

ever since. I wash my hair each other day, flat iron it as soon as every week, and wrap it every evening. The most troublesome thing about transitioning is the period of time it takes to straighten my hair and the humidity throughout spring and summer season are the killer! truthfully, the humidity and results it has on my pure is what has nearly pushed me in direction of stress-free my hair again.

If you are willing to take the time to know your hair, then your hair may have received the time and understanding it must be treated in a manner finest suited to your tastes! Just making an attempt to encourage you to see the wonder past your hair. Relax it if you want or straighten it if you’d like however belief me leaving it simply natural and straightening you’ll see an entire distinction in the well being in your hair. Just do what you’re compelled to do and please yourself.

I believe leaving your hair natural is the best way identical to I was once advised “If you can’t use it whereas you’re pregnant then you understand it’s not healthy.” So we all know you’re not alleged to loosen up your hair while pregnant due to the tough chemical compounds. Those girls who normally run straight to relaxers are those who’re always complaining that there hair is unmanageable and dry.

With the right pure hair products your hair to make it manageable corresponding to Cantu and Shea Butter merchandise assist with most natural hair. And if your hair is dry is as a outcome of it’s dried out and damaged from the relaxer and not stress-free it will assist it regain the moisture. Some pure girls feel as if ladies who choose to relax their hair are betraying their African roots, relaxed women really feel as if they’re continually under assault by the naturals over their choice to course of their hair. The execs of natural hair are it’s not going to be stripped of their natural oils. Natural hair can also be the best whenever you need to dye your hair you might have a least quantity of breakage.

“Many people have completely different reasons for getting their hair relaxed.” (Barret 101) Hair damage from years of harsh chemical use. Y’all keep in mind the scene from “Good Hair” when the scientist melts the aluminum can with that active ingredient in relaxers. The Hair Care Suite informs that “relaxers irreversibly alter the natural pH balance and chemical breakdown of your hair, thereby weakening every strand. Hair breakage and scalp irritation are very common unwanted side effects from improper software and/or maintenance.” Also the chemicals in your hair don’t combine well with other chemicals (i.e. the chlorine in pools) and can additional damage your lovely locks. We lied.

Both natural hair and relaxed hair require beaucoup consideration. The difference with relaxed hair is that when it’s conditioned/hydrated it must be intense. Natural hair wants a little bit of moisture continuously. Dana’s Loft has a great group of products which are loaded with moisture. Damage from chemical course of to different components of the body. Remember whenever you have been younger and momma stated, “Keep your eyes closed! You don’t want any of the cream getting in your eyes, making you blind.” Well it’s true; the chemical compounds do burn and are tremendous poisonous to any a half of your dermis, particularly the scalp.

Be careful when applying and by no means let anybody put a relaxer in your hair with out greasing your complete head first. When I wore a relaxer straightening my hair took a couple of hours as soon as every week. But if I didn’t really feel like doing that I might just throw it into a ponytail or bun. Now that I don’t have a relaxer I don’t have that luxury anymore. If my hair was straightened it will be lengthy enough to throw into a ponytail by now, but my texture is basically thick and kinky so it shrinks up so much that I can’t get it into one large puff but. If I wished a fast style I suppose I might just wash my hair then add a little product and permit it to air-dry however I hate carrying my hair that way. I like to put on my hair either in twists, twist-outs, and Bantu knots and styling my hair these ways takes lots of time.

I love my natural hair, don’t get me wrong…but there are a variety of reasons I decided to chill out, and none of them have to do with hating my pure hair or not figuring out the way to take care of it etc. The no 1 cause I did it is as a result of I was bored and needed a change. I thought about it for months, and I did many different styles in that point looking for one which I constantly favored. I beloved my relaxed hair. It was much simpler to take care of and there have been extra styles that I can do in less time than with my pure hair. I love that you can see the size and how sleek it seems. I might solely been relaxed for a brief time period. I could one day miss my pure hair and determine to go back.

But I don’t like all the judgment there is about relaxed vs. natural. Everyone ought to be ready to choose what is greatest for them with out getting flamed for their selection. There are so many reasons to be natural, and simply as many to be relaxed. So what’s best is completely dependent on the individual. Now that they make “healthier relaxers” like Organix, Olive Oil, and African Pride brands. As lengthy as you like yourself and your hair and project confidence, it won’t even matter whether individuals adore it or hate it. When I was contemplating going natural I was afraid of what folks would assume, however now I really don’t care because I love my hair and I wouldn’t return to hair relaxers again.

My hair is now healthier, stronger and longer since my switch. The benefits to being pure far outweigh the downsides to it for me. I actually love my hair even when it’s a pain to do. The hardest part of the whole course of isn’t caring about what individuals will think about it. As lengthy as you’re eager on your self and your hair and project confidence, it won’t even matter whether or not individuals adore it or hate it. When I was considering going pure I was afraid of what individuals would think, however now I really don’t care as a result of I love my hair and I wouldn’t go back to hair relaxers again.

American Beauty – Analysis

I had seen the movie American Beauty when it was first launched, nevertheless it was a unique experience for me this time. I was intently inspecting the interpersonal conflict in the movie. The movie is predicated around the Burnham household. Lester and Carolyn are husband and wife, and so they have a teenage daugther, Janie. On the skin they seem like a normal household. As the film performs, it is obvious the characters are all a unfavorable result of interpersonal battle.

“Conflict is a critical occasion in the midst of a relationship. Conflict may cause resentment, hostility and perhaps the ending of the relatonship”(DonnaBellafiore). Carolyn is extraordinarily self-centered and demanding. She controls the household together with her underlying anger. Lester is a shell of a man. His self-concept could be very low and he is depressed. This undoubtedly due to his lack of communication along with his spouse. “Self-concept is the thought you could have of who you might be and what makes you totally different from everyone else”(Sole,K).

In part of the film he realizes he has lost something, but he doesn’t know what. He has lost his vanity due his interpersonal conflict with his wife and daughter.

In one scene Carolyn and Lester have arrived at a celebration Lester doesn’t want to attend. Carolyn tells him to act pleased, but sadly she by no means wonders why he is not pleased. In one other scene the household is on the dinner table. Carolyn is speaking about her day and Lester informs her that he has quit his job.

She mocks him for doing so and tries to get Janie into the conversation. Lester becomes extremely indignant, they usually start responsible each other for their lack of communication. Their behaviors not solely affect their relationship negatively, however has weakened the relationship they have with Janie. Carolyn handles her battle by having an affair rather than communicating her frustrations with her husband, Lester. Lester black-mails his boss, quits his job and calls for a years pay and benefits. This is a technique that Lester handles his anger. Janie and her relationship with her parents, especially her father, continues to deteriorate. Janie becomes emotionaly involved with the model new neighbor and school-mate Ricky. When Janie’s pal Angela, comes over to visit, her father all the time will get excited and flirts with her. This upsets Janie, but Angela likes it.

Angela tells Janie Lesters attraction to her makes her understand she has potential to be a model. Angela shows no empathy for Janie’s feelings of negativity in the direction of her father. “Empathy is the action of understanding, being conscious of, being delicate to, and vicariously experiencing the emotions, ideas and expertise of another”(merrriam-websterdictionary). As a result of his attraction to Angela, Lester begins working out. He begins to feel higher about himself because of getting in shape. There is a scene in the film the place Lester sits on the sofa subsequent to his spouse, Carolyn. He begins softly chatting with her and useing non-verbal cues reminding her of how a lot fun she was when they were youthful. She begins to smile, and for a second you consider they are going to be type to each other. as an alternative, Carolyn jumps up and freaks out because Lester almost spilled his beer on the couch. Lester becomes angry as he tries to clarify to her that her materials issues mean extra to her than residing.

The second of kindness between them is over-destroyed by Carolyns confusion with her priorities and her must be in control. It is at all times about her. As Janie becomes extra indignant along with her father, she befriends her neighbor, Ricky Fitz. Ricky is forth-coming and confident. However, he has been physicaly and verbaly abused by his father. Mr. Fitz is an ex-marine. When he introduces himself to people he at all times says “Frank Fitz Cornel within the Marine Corps”(SamMendes, producer,1999,AmericanBeauty). He has a need for individuals to see him as a robust man, having been a Marine. This is his nice accomplishment in life. he has overwhelmed Ricky and verbaly abused him, and sent him away for two years on account of Ricky severely beating a boy, most likely a response to his anger towards his father.

Franks wife, Ricky’s Mom, is emotionless. She has no self-concept because of Franks persona, anger and overpowerment. Their home is a chilly surroundings. There isn’t any regular communication between the three of them. There is a scene where Frank and Ricky meet the neighbors-JIm and JIm. They are a homosexual couple who’ve simply moved into the neighborhood . Frank freaks out about the couple. His response shows that he is homophobic by his negative comments. Ricky agrees with his father in an effort to maintain the situaton secure. Ricky is trying to avoid a beating. Ricky and Janie are building a relationship and becoming shut. Ricky has also built a relationshio with Lester. He sells Lester Marijuana . Ricky goes to Lester’s home to sell him marijuana one explicit night time. Frank can see Ricky and lester by way of the window. Frank thinks what he is seeing is Ricky having oral intercourse with Lester. He beats Ricky when he comes house. Ricky runs to Janie and asks her to run away with him, she agrees.

At the end of the movie, Lester is in the garage. Frank approaches him, as he walks through the pouring rain. He has an expression of ache and concern on his face. Lester approaches Lester (thinking lester is gay) and wraps his arms round him in a hug. Lester tries to be comforting, but then Lester tries to kiss him. Lester pulls again expressing to Frank that there should be some type of understanding. Lester is not a homosexual man. Frank walks away with tears in his eyes. Ricky and Janie are up in her room planning their departure, and Carolyn is on her method home. She has been taking capturing lessons and carrys a gun in her glove compartment. Suddenly a gun shot is heard.

Carolyn has justed pulled into the driveway, we surprise was it her who killed Lester? Jamie and Ricky discover Lester shot within the head. Frank Fitz has shot Lester. He would somewhat have him useless than risk sharing Franks secret with anyone. Frank was a gay man. He spent his entire life covering up this actuality, and within the course of destroyed his spouse and abused his child. After shooting Lester, Frank goes house to his room crammed with guns and navy memorabilia, and shoots himself. The households on this film had such poor interpersonal communication that they destroyed one another. It was a schock for me to see such a lack of communication trigger such destruction.

Aesthetics and Beauty

Beauty is all over the place. This world is full of magnificence and something may be considered lovely. By definition, magnificence is a combination of qualities current in a factor or person who pleases aesthetic senses or brings satisfaction. It’s not just a person’s outward look that might be outlined by magnificence, magnificence can be something. Beauty is subjective and it has many criteria’s for an object to be considered “beautiful”. No matter how anyone can describe bodily magnificence, it’s a conclusion that beauty relies on the beholder which catches attentions and holds an internal that means behind it.

When describing a sure thing as beautiful, it catches interest of the speaker. If by instance, a person in an artwork exhibition finds a sure portray lovely, that individual would then have a sense of affection in path of the portray. It can either be like or love of the portray that caused the particular person to explain the portray as beautiful. Beauty can trigger an individual to have that awe-inspiring moment.

These moments means that a sure object has the looks of personal perfection. Whether it is crisp, shiny, sharp or maybe a higher sense of curiosity in the direction of the item, magnificence is the word to describe it.

Beauty overloads one’s aesthetic senses so that it grasps consideration of the viewer. Because aesthetic sense is predicated on one’s preferences, it’s totally different among others. Beauty incorporates a deep meaning and satisfaction. There are many different descriptive phrases like “cute”, “good looking”, “gorgeous”, and so forth.

but, utilizing “beautiful” is a extra powerful descriptive word. This is because magnificence is like one other word of perfection and that it has loads of meanings in itself. By saying “You’re beautiful” to a person, signifies that the speaker is glad with the person’s appearance and that it completes one’s preference.

In a way, it is like saying “You have excellent look. ” Beauty is more than a word, that accommodates a deeper which means behind it. It’s all about opinion when describing one thing as stunning. A person could argue that the famous picture of Mona Lisa is beautiful, whereas the individual subsequent to him would disagree. Everyone has a unique criterion of what beauty actually is. The well-liked phrase “beauty is within the eyes of the beholder” reinforces that magnificence is opinionated. Since every individual has their very own opinion of what magnificence appears like, magnificence would always be totally different. It is because of this that every little thing may be stunning.

Aesthetics and Beauty in Simple Terms

Aesthetics simply means relating to, appreciating, or perceiving the gorgeous. Beauty, if it might be outlined simply, means whatever captures your coronary heart for that second in time that you’ve been blessed. We are all the time told that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but I think it is the perspective of that eye that makes something much more beautiful. Beauty could be one thing to perceive or observe, however only when the spectator turns into a participant, can somebody really start to appreciate it for all that it could have to offer.

Many individuals could agree that one thing is beautiful, however the depth of that beauty can eventually turn into fathomless beyond the point of creativeness if skilled.

I remember fondly when, as children, we might run wildly across the sector and lie on our backs as we let the blades of grass tickle our ears while the nice and cozy summer season wind blew across the yard and swirled around us. The leaves of the bushes could be heard taking deep breaths for the thicket just throughout the fence from the place we would be.

We would lie there gazing at the sky because the stage full of performing clouds of each form and dimension would dance in entrance of us. For the adults, it must have appeared that our inner engines had lastly run out of gasoline as we would limply fall or jump on the ground, when really, play had merely taken a unique type for a while. Those reminiscences and visions are stunning to suppose about; especially when contemplating the simplicity of life again then, and even more fun to recollect when time stops and permits for reflection.

Aesthetics is, as a mother or father, having the flexibility to watch my youngsters do similar issues and it warms my heart like a heat July sun. Hearing the laughter ring via the air as they run and jump and play video games that are not filled with restricting rules, and barriers of steerage; watching them as they run in circles chasing leaves that are blowing throughout the bottom, or catching “flutter-bys” on the wildflowers in the meadow. It is nearly as if they are teasing the youngsters to attempt to catch them if they’ll, and as the tiny creature grows weary of the game, it merely flies higher into the sky, out of attain, and away from the commotion. The children are simply certain by the perfect of having the ability to be together and have fun. Falling down means you simply get again up and run again with out concern of damage or ache as a end result of you’ve a task at hand that needs immediate attention… have fun.

Somewhere within the deepest a half of all our lives, is a particular second in time the place we thought we could stay forever. The days of Peter Pan and Wendy and by no means growing up had been at one point in our lives, something we thought we might do; some may have even believed they could fly like these fabled characters or have powers like their favourite superhero. So if the saying “beauty is in the eye of the beholder” is true, then things like listening to a baby’s snicker, and seeing a child’s first steps; or trying into your lover’s eyes should certainly be things of magnificence. But when it’s all said and done, in these final fleeting moments of life, if there is a liked one to offer a hand to carry, then all things transcend from being beautiful, they usually turn into priceless.

A Woman”s Beauty

In reading Susan Sontag’s “A Woman’s Beauty”, she explains that girls assume they have an obligation to be stunning and that they consider how they look more essential than who they’re. Sontag also adds that women are generally obsessive about their outer beauty that they lose sight of their inside beauty. Fashion and the Media each have taken outer beauty way too far for ladies. In this society right now, ladies are more pressured by different girls on how they appear.

Women judge different women about their seems but males don’t do the same, as a end result of it is considered” unmanly” as Sontag states. Women naturally attempt to be acceptable and exquisite to attract males. Unfortunately, they’ve gone to very excessive levels of obsession with themselves that they lost observe of their purpose of being stunning and their position in this society. Sontag additionally argues that women on the identical time have the concept of their minds that being beautiful will earn them a certain popularity and place in society, and that magnificence brings energy and success.

Even young women grow up have these same ideas in their minds and in accordance with Sontag, “they are taught to see their our bodies in parts and to judge each part separately”. In trendy days beauty is administered as a type of self-oppression. In the method of growing up, young ladies may overlook how clever they’re and their objectives in life. According to some people who have been surveyed about women’s success in the society, good looks are a great advantage in many areas of life.

Let’s go back to the purpose that ladies try to make themselves lovely to draw one of the best males attainable.

Women neglect that beauty can be the facility to attract. In women’s view, males come in whole packages together with being handsome and successful. On the other hand, males just want simply want wholesome and decent ladies with good persona. Susag Sontag’s essay is certainly very correct in revealing some essential facts about women’s magnificence and the means in which the society seems at ladies. The world isn’t a magnificence pageant where every girl has to look perfect. There are many people that assume that magnificence is more important, but there are additionally folks that feel that a lady with a great head and personality will get than primarily based on simply seems alone. It is a proven fact that magnificence is in the eye of the beholder, and everyone has their own view on what’s beautiful to them.

A Terrible Beauty Is Born

“A terrible magnificence is born“, this line is taken from the superb poem “Easter 1916” by William Butler Yeats. W.B Yeats uses these words to describe the Easter Rising which resulted in the demise of fifteen republican leaders together with their comrades. These events in Irish history have brought celebration but additionally quite lots of sorrow which Yeats describes completely with this clever oxymoron – A horrible magnificence.

A lot has changed since “Easter 1916” was written, but its phrases have remained related to even the issues of today’s world.

I personally believe that cloning and stem cell use are the fashionable days terrible beauties. Fifty years in the past we didn’t even know what a gene was, although right now barely a day passes with out radio stations, television stations or newspapers discussing genetically modified food, animal clones, DNA finger printing, transgenic animals, human gene remedy and not to mention the ever-going debate to legalise the medical analysis of stem cells. With the announcement that a research facility in England had efficiently cloned a sheep, many groups worldwide similar to doctors, politicians, non secular members and so forth.

Have been battling with the query – Should the analysis of cloning be taken further? Many docs imagine that cloning is an development to assist save more lives though specific organs or blood types have but to be cloned and truly made obtainable to the overall medical community. Think about it. If someone desperately needed a liver transplant, with the assist of cloning expertise, docs would be capable of clone that persons liver cells and produce a wholesome, genetically matched liver thus saving that person’s life.

In a means cloning may revolutionise the medical trade. While many doctors are on the up-side of cloning, many politicians play a more on-the-fence position. They can see the medical advantage however are nonetheless rather reluctant.

Most politicians need something for themselves for his or her endorsement either method on an essential issue. Since cloning isn’t yet able to be made accessible by any means to most people, it isn’t yet a significant issue for politicians though in the coming years, as politicians make the laws it’s ultimately of their arms whether or not or not stem cell analysis or cloning might be legalised sooner or later. The analysis of cloning has attracted a great amount of negative consideration from spiritual members, many declare that cloning is disturbing the pure order of the world and as some people describe as enjoying God. Their argument is that cloning will take away the pure side of life and demise. If a child is killed it’s potential for the child’s parents to clone him/her, in my view that just doesn’t appear right, does it? That a parent can simply exchange their very own child.

A whole new argument would come up as to if it is proper to look upon the clones as inferior, that clones are more than likely to turn into enslaved and even worse harvested for organ transplants, these are each are merciless and really viable arguments, image yourself being enslaved and having your organs taken just since you have been cloned and not born naturally. I believe cloning is a great instance of a terrible magnificence but with all these scientific breakthroughs there are advantages and downsides. Cloning has been strongly advised because it may gain advantage modern drugs. But even today, the complete potential of stem cells has not but been absolutely explored. The concern of the stem cells has led to controversy as a result of embryos are usually used and they have to be destroyed to allow for using its cells.

The question is – Is this the right idea? Should embryos be destroyed? Many researchers imagine that stem cells will finally change the face of drugs as we know it. Given the reality that the cells can be manipulated to imitate other cell sorts, this could present new strategies in treating ailments similar to cancer and Alzheimer’s. Cloning has additionally supplied hope to many people who discover themselves in the waiting record for an organ transplant; often folks requiring organ transplants to outlive an illness typically wait years for an appropriate donor. In many cases these sufferers die waiting, as there is a long listing of individuals in the identical state of affairs and very few get the organs they so badly want. Another benefit of cloning would be the power to guard endangered species.

Despite the most effective efforts of conservationists worldwide, some species are nearing extinction. The successful cloning of Dolly represents step one in defending endangered wildlife. This essay is titled “A horrible magnificence is born” as a result of although there might be many benefits which could resolve the world’s most generally discussed problems which is indeed a wonderful thing it could possibly also lead to horrible outcomes such as the seemingly successful story of Dolly the sheep, it is incontrovertible fact that many embryos were destroyed before the desired outcome was achieved. The course of started with 277 eggs and Dolly was the one successful outcome.

Another disadvantage of cloning is that cloning creates a duplicate of the unique. A human clone for example would subsequently inherit the genetic traits of its predecessor. I see cloning as a terrible magnificence as a outcome of absolutely it’s an amazing breakthrough within the scientific analysis, however what if this breakthrough is abused as cloning, like so many other issues that have faced trendy science must be rigorously evaluated. There will at all times be detractors, those that feel that this method is playing God and this will not be too removed from the reality however, any dialogue on cloning have to be looked at within the context of its inherent value to mankind.

“A Thing of Beauty” by Charles Kray

“A Thing of Beauty” by Charles Kray is a very interesting story about how a Nazi soldier interrogates nuns at a convent. This is a very attention-grabbing matter as a end result of it’s unusual and it explores the different outcomes of the state of affairs.

It was very surprising that the colonel didn’t kill Sister Benedicte even though he knew that she was really Edith Stein. Kray’s use of tone and sarcasm within the script helps create the backbone of the story and builds rigidity within the play.

The structure of the play is very easy yet it is a crucial side of making the play interesting. The Prioress and the Colonel begin off by speaking in regards to the Colonel’s seek for Edith Stein. This just isn’t solely an thrilling beginning that will get the viewers interested, however it is also very informative as a end result of it introduces what the play is about and what the intentions of the colonel is. As the play progresses, the Colonel insist on the interrogation of Sister Benedicta, as a outcome of he had a powerful intuition that she is, or was, Edith Stein.

During the interrogation, each the colonel and Sister Benedicta learnt lots from each other. They both have different point of views and they clarify to each other why they consider of their ideas. At the tip, the colonel turns into satisfied that Sister Benedicta is Edith Stein, but he does not take her away to kill her, because after listening to her teachings, he has a greater understanding of the situation. The ending is essential as a result of it’s the ultimate moment to see the Colonel’s decision in what occurs to Sister Benedicta.

Throughout the story, Kray builds the tension, maintaining the audience involved. In the beginning the tension already begins as a result of the Colonel instantly needs to seek out this Edith Stein and goes through excessive measures to find her. “…nineteen innocent nuns are taken off a practice like criminals and sent to a concentration camp.” The audience is in suspense during Sister Benedicta’s interrogation with the Colonel because with each question he asks, the viewers wonders if she might be put into focus camp. At the tip of their conversation, the suspense is at its peak because it is the ultimate second when the decision is to be made. “You could go, Sister. (Pause) Oh Sister? (Pause) I shall go on searching.” Everybody is lastly relieved that the Colonel lets Sister Benedicta go at the finish of the play.

Both Sister Benedicta and the Colonel are very sturdy characters and strongly help their point of view. They each battle and argue in regards to the scenario and their arguments are very sturdy. “Sister, you would possibly be preaching concern. Do you suppose you can intimidate me? We are masters at this sort of technique,” the Colonel says, proving his point. As they each clarify to one another about their robust level of views, they being to learn from each other. They see by way of every others’ eyes, and both change their views, particularly the Colonel. Even although the Colonel changed his views, he stays dedicated to the military and pretends that he did not change his views. “You are like a parrot, Colonel. You spew the party line faithfully.” Sister Benedicta says, explaining that he is only saying that as a end result of he’s a Nazi soldier, not because he really believes in it.

“A Thing of Beauty” is a really controversial story as a end result of there are two sides to take a look at: the Jewish and Catholic views. It’s suspenseful and exciting and will hold the audience ready for the end. Kray uses plenty of literary techniques to make the play script effective and fascinating. He makes use of completely different tones and irony to carry out the factors.

Beauty pageants

How many of you have heard or seen of the reality TV show Toddler and Tiaras ? It’s a show where toddlers and young children mainly girls, take the stage wearing make up, spray tans, nails done, fake hair and fake teeth. They are to be judged on their beauty, personality and costumes. Parental ambitions can make there children socially unconnected with other children and sometimes mentally and physically drained. Parents have gone to extremes to make their child the best.

The young toddlers are competing world wide to be judged based on looks, poise, perfection, and confidents, From as young as 6 months old. Beauty pageants within children are very exploitive because they promote a materialistic belief to young girls, damaging self-esteem, and encouragement to be “divas.” The object of child beauty pageants is to win money, a big crown, and occasionally other prizes like a bouncy house or a teddy bear. During the events, young girls are criticised by judges as they get on stage wearing skimpy clothes, shaking the butt while making kiddy faces.

The parents coach their toddlers to win, no matter what the cost. Mothers hire make-up artist and hair stylist to make sure their child looks better then the others. The girls have “rivalries” with other girls who do pageants and they aren’t even 8 years old yet! They will literally seek out their competition to tell them that they’re ugly and say that they’re going to lose. Encouraging such competitive nature in little children could carry over to when they’re older. Life isn’t about always winning, and people shouldn’t be telling their kids that! Beauty pageants wrongly teach little toddlers and children that the only way to be happy is to win and be perfect.

A young child getting spray tanned, false nails, false eyelashes and they are like 2 and hate it, is definitely wrong! I mean, caking your kid in make up and then telling them they’re beautiful isn’t right.

Its sometimes not the children’s wish to do these pageants, it is the parents (the mothers) desire to give their daughter something that maybe the mother could never accomplish herself.

“A San Francisco mum is injecting her 8 year old daughter with botox to get rid of wrinkles and she insists that she’s not the only mum who’s doing it. The pain 8-year-old Britney Campbell describes doesn’t come from falling off her bike, or losing a tooth-but from this: Botox injections-administered by her Mother. Campbell”s mother says she started giving the injections to keep up with the beauty-take-all world of the pageant circuit an idea planted by other pageant mums. Photos taken during one of Britney’s Botox treatments – capture just how uncomfortable an adult cosmetic procedure can be.”

Child beauty pageants have children dressed up in inappropriate clothing. A few examples from Toddlers and Tiaras are; a girl dressed up as a prostitute from Pretty Women and a girl’s mother putting in fake breasts and fake butt padding for her Dolly Parton talent routine. The mum said “she was just playing the part. She had no idea what she was doing.” Exactly! The child has no Idea what’s she’s doing. Most costumes have cuts in the sides or in the back that reveal a lot of skin. This is teaching little children that dressing this way is ok.

When they’re older, they might wear clothing that is similar, although it’s not appropriate at that age either. Also, these parents are exposing their girls to possible pedophilia. Competitions showing little girls prancing around in skimpy dresses. Some little, innocent pageant girl could be the main focus of a pedophile. Parents should not be dressing their girls so proactively. There have been reports of children that have been sexually abused. These researches have shown that the sexualisation of child beauty pageants is a contributing factor to the abuse.

Child beauty pageants send inappropriate messages to young girls about how they should act in society. Child beauty pageant contestants are taught that if you look pretty, you win prizes. These girls are put in huge frilly dresses, given fake hair pieces, caked in makeup, and are already getting spray tans. Their developing minds will determine that being pretty is the best thing to be in life. A girl named Daisey Mae was on Toddlers and Tiaras. She was 8 years old and she said “Facial beauty is the most important thing in life.” That is exactly what I’m talking about. These girls grow up learning one skill: how to be pretty. Women spent over 72 years fighting to be seen and heard as more than just a pretty face. Over the past 10 years, there has been a 270% increase in the number of girls being hospitalized for eating disorders. Some of these girls are as young as 7 years old. Many of the girls with eating disorders have them because of body image. Beauty pageant girls are becoming anorexic just so they can be pretty and win trophies.

Child beauty pageants is absolutely unacceptable. Children should be on playgrounds and playing games. Not wearing make up and having fake tans. And to not be judged for how they look. I believe that child beauty pageants should not put young girls in such situations. Child beauty pageants should not be allowed.

How important is beauty?

Beauty is a general term that often refers to a nice appearance and pleasing looks. It is not so easy to determine what has caused or causes beauty to feature so prominently in society today. There are individuals who argue that the media has reinforced certain stereotypes of beauty but there are yet others who put forth the idea that the media merely reflects the prevailing sentiments of beauty on the ground. It is also not easy to determine exactly how much physical beauty actually impacts our lives, careers, relationships, and happiness. Although multiple studies have tackled this controversial question, there are no clear cut answers. Most of the studies draw the same conclusion that even though we tend to say beauty is only skin deep, humans put much more importance on looks than we would like to admit. Brief explanation (in point form) of ideas

Balance to be captured
There is no doubt that beauty plays an important role in a society where one is judged based on one’s appearance and where looks matter a great deal. The important role that beauty plays in society can be seen from the numerous beauty pageants that we hold every year such as Miss World, Miss Universe and Miss Earth, just to name a few. Beauty is certainly an important feature of these beauty pageants where women are ranked based on their looks in different aspects of the competition ranging from the swim suit to the evening wear segments. In such contests, beauty definitely has real benefits for the contestants as it helps them to achieve their desire of winning such beauty contests.

However, these beauty pageants which uphold unattainable and idealistic standards of beauty may inadvertently lower women’s self-esteem because such beauty pageants ultimately objectify women as there is such a great emphasis on looks. Such an objectification of women does not bode well in the long run for them because it discounts the intrinsic value and worth that they have as individuals. Beauty is important because without an intimate knowledge of a person’s character, we tend to judge others on shallower factors such as looks. In fairy tales, Disney princesses are often portrayed as good-looking and virtuous. We are led to believe that attractive women with their hourglass figures and flowing locks are the symbols of innocence and goodness. Since childhood, we are inclined to impart positive characteristics to attractive people and negative characteristics to unattractive people. The important role that beauty plays in society is further reinforced in the workplace.

A study emphasised this beauty bias when it concluded that taller men and thinner women earn more than their shorter or heavier peers. Nonetheless, employers alone cannot be blamed for this beauty bias. Customers too, prefer attractive employees.

We are more likely to buy products from attractive salespeople, and are more likely to tip pretty waitresses. In China, there have been individuals who reported going for plastic surgery before a job interview to increase their chances of getting the job. The great significance that beauty has in society today is both reflected and perpetuated by the media. There are numerous slimming advertisements both on television and in the newspapers which stipulate a certain definition of beauty. However, it is difficult to determine whether these advertisements create such an image of beauty in the minds of people or whether it is the mirror that reflects what people consider to be beautiful. Nevertheless, there are companies that strive to widen the definition of beauty in society today.

Unilever launched the Dove Campaign for Real Beauty in order to celebrate the different types of beauty that exist in society today The fact that the media aims to widen the scope of beauty goes to show that beauty still plays an important role in society today. However, it should be noted that placing too much importance on beauty and an obsession with it is not healthy as it is usually a symptom of low self-esteem and insecurity. Individuals who obsess over their looks would be willing to undergo liposuction, risking even death, in order to get rid of their excess fats.

In addition, there are also teenagers who hanker after unrealistic standards of beauty and inevitably succumb to psychological disorders such as anorexia and bulimia. In spite of beauty’s transience, it is pretty amazing when we consider what individuals would do in the quest for beauty. We need to examine whether it is healthy for individuals to go to such extreme lengths in order to achieve their definition of beauty. There are often underlying issues that need to be addressed as to why an individual would be obsessed with one’s beauty and the root causes are often deep feelings of insecurity. Conclusion

While there is no doubt that beauty certainly plays a significant role in our lives and careers, we should be mindful not to place undue importance on beauty. Although the quote “beauty is only skin deep” might sound cliché to some, there is an undeniable truth in the quote as beauty is impermanent and is transient. What might be considered “beautiful” today might no longer be considered “beautiful” in tomorrow’s fashion industry. As such, we should not obsess over beauty in society because of its impermanence.

Pitfalls
Trivial examples which focus solely on people’s physical appearance and heading into an extended discussion of plastic surgery, the use of cosmetics and a general criticism of how superficial society has become. Hijacking the question and launching into a discussion of how beauty is not important because other valued traits are important instead without linking it to beauty.

The Concept of Beauty in Different Cultures

The philosophy of supreme beauty in art is an idea that has always been relentlessly changing. The 15th-16th century Renaissance period followed the Middle Ages in Europe, and thus the Renaissance perception of beauty was an accumulation of realistic and classically beautiful ideals as a revival in classical learning came about. Additionally, Renaissance art attempted to demonstrate an appreciation for the beauty of the natural world. Conversely, art from the Romanticism and Realism periods of the 19th century glorified mystery, imagination, and emotional concepts. The power of nature was extremely prevalent in Romantic art, as was using animals to generate metaphors for human behavior. Explorations into the concept of beauty in both cultures will assist in illustrating the unique principles or philosophies of each time period.

Vittore Carpaccio’s painting, The Flight into Egypt (Gallery 10), was painted during the Renaissance period in 1515. It depicts an old man holding a walking stick and pulling a donkey behind him. On top of the donkey sits a woman and a baby—from their intricate garments and the subtle halos around their heads, it becomes clear that the woman is Mary and the baby is Jesus. The painting is intended to be very detailed; the vegetation and flowers are meticulously painted and each plant is unique. Even in the background, the trees, mountains, and sky are all very realistic and vibrant in color.

Accordingly, one gets the idea that nature was considered very beautiful and important to the Renaissance artists. In examining the faces in the painting, it becomes apparent that Renaissance artists also considered pale skin, pale hair, thin eyebrows, and narrow lips to be very beautiful. The colorful garb in itself suggests that the Renaissance valued human life in general. Regardless of the nervous expression on the man’s face and the impending sense of doom, the painting overall provides for an investigation into the Renaissance artists’ concept of beauty: vibrant colors, the significance of nature, and realistic portrayals.

The Swing (Gallery 55), by Jean-Honoré Fragonard, was painted between 1775 and 1780 during the Romanticism and Realism periods. It portrays a beautiful scene outdoors in some kind of courtyard, with many women resting in the grass below. The women are dressed elaborately, but their faces are too indistinct to actually examine. From their attire and hand gestures, however, it is implied that the women are enjoying themselves. Many have an arm raised or extended, and a few people are surrounding a white dog. This goes hand in hand with the Romantic period’s familiar idea of emotion—this sense of happiness and carefree attitude is considered beautiful to Romantic artists.

With a swing set, a telescope, and beautiful skies, an element of mysticism emerges in the painting, suggesting that artists from this time period held opposing concepts of beauty in comparison to artists from the Renaissance. Rather than appreciating realistic portrayals in paintings, Romantic artists focused instead on actions and the natural world. Nature plays a very vital role in this painting. Some trees resemble columns of smoke, while others loom over the women with branches like bowed fingers. While the trees on the left side of the painting are rich in color (varying shades of green), the right side maintains similar shapes but has darker hues—displaying mostly grays. This represents the common Romanticism theme of the power of nature; it is ever-changing and mystifying, but beautiful nonetheless.

Both the Renaissance period and the Romanticism and Realism periods have contrasting concepts of beauty. While the former emphasizes realistic and classic themes, the latter focuses on emotion and imagination. In spite of their differences, both appreciate the power of nature as beauty.

Over the years, the internet has greatly changed the way people use computers and communicate today. Many Internet terms have become part of people’s everyday living. By the turn of the century, information, including access to the Internet, will be the basis for personal, economic, and political
advancement. Internet find you the latest financial news, browse through library catalogs and many more. You can also exchange information with friends; Internet is also the tool that will take you beyond information about our surroundings and it also gives knowledge to other people.

Modern day’s web sites seem to be one of the sources of information today. Website is a typically written in a plain text but because of our technology, it can be seen as a module in the internet. Website can be used for personal purposes, business purposes and it can also be used in giving some information.

Beauty Salon can make a website for their other business purposes. The first thing to start in choosing a salon is to evaluate what needs to be done. A customer who just wants her hair trimmed might go to a beauty salon. If a woman wants her hair cut promptly she might be visit a walk-in salon and trying to find her regular stylist. For other kind of services, a woman wants to think about a full-service in by-appointment-only beauty salon. This signifies that she will have a stylist that knows what she wants to be done. Other than that customers can have a problem while they were go to the nearest salon, sometimes the stylist they want are not available so they will wait for it and for some reason sometimes customers are really impatient so they will go to the other Salon and do their hair treatment there. Traditional reservation of a Beauty Salon is a way that the customers are going to the salon and have a schedule for a treatment and for scheduling an hairdresser, While the online reservation for a beauty salon you can reserve a treatment and choosing a hair dresser that the customers really wanted. It’s easy to have an online reservation than walking to a salon to have a reservation. It can save time for those customers with a hectic schedule.

OBJECTIVES:
The main objective is to develop a system for an online Reservation of a Beauty Salon. This study aim specifically the following listed below:
1. To save enough time travelling around than looking other salon’s that
is full of customer. 2. It is easy to have an online reservation for women and other man that are too busy doing things and they don’t have enough time to spend just for waiting in the Salon. 3. Having an online reservation of beauty salon can gain more customers because of the uniqueness of it. 4. Customers can have spare time and they can choose what days they can have a treatment in the Beauty Salon. 5. They can choose a hairdresser that they really wanted than having a new one because of the availability of the hairdresser.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
The following will benefit from this:
* Customers: They can gain good services in the beauty salon and also they will not go there at beauty salon to get some reservations. They can choose their own hairdresser if they wanted. * Beauty Salon: They can gain more customers as they use an online reservation for the customers.

SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS:
The research includes some information about the Beauty Salon, Website Reservation, and Customers Agenda in the specific salon. The limitation of this system is it only covers the reservations of the customers. How they can get a reservation and the availability of the stylist they want.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

A beauty salon may just offer hair care & hair styling services, or nail services, manicures and pedicures. Most businesses classified as beauty salons offer a combination of hair styling and nail services. In addition, beauty salons may offer skin care services performed by estheticians, including facials, exfoliating scrubs and anti-aging techniques. Many beauty salons also offer cosmetic services such as makeup application, eye beautification, and general makeovers and cosmetic instruction.

(Salas, Mega fashion magazine,2013) says that when people talk about beauty, certain things come to mind-makeup or designer outfits or skincare line-limiting the concept of beauty to something superficial. Beauty icon Audrey Hepburn, however, disagreed when she said that the beauty of woman is not in the clothes she wears, the figure that she carries, or the way she combs her hair. True enough, many will agree that real beauty comes from somewhere deeper than skin. Life Science believes in exactly that.

Online Appointment Scheduling is an optional feature that is included with all packages of software. Your business can have its own, customized web site and your clients can book appointments and view your business’s information such as services offered, specials, location, over the Internet. This also gives the researcher a background regarding the aspects which have been studied and not yet studied.

Patricia McLaughlin (1990), over 26 million of people visit a beauty salon, and 68 of them choose their own hairdresser or stylist for psychological reasons. Some of customers talking with their hairstylist for their own problems and many of the customers believe in the advice of the stylist. McLaughlin states that “Too much advertising and you may have overspent”. One of the biggest challenges of salon owner is getting the marketing mix right. Over the years, salon’s owners learn how to advertise their business in a proper way, a little way and they also doing a trials and errors.

Rather than that Beauty salons may have some difficulties in treating some customer’s. Marissa Gold (2013) noted that “communicate pretty clearly”. She says that she wanted to have a tiny trim for her hair but unfortunately the stylist do andhours later her hair cut an inch. And in the other time the other stylist threaded her eyebrows and then she believe that going to salon without a proper stylist is such a waste of time.

Melody McCloskey (2013) as a former manager of online content at Current TV. The San Francisco start up helps consumers find and book a hair stylist, aesthetician, makeup artist or other beauty professional online. McCloskey stated that “The whole process was so cumbersome.” McCloskey wants to review
sites and read another reviews. Finding a stylist is difficult because oftentimes they weren’t available so you will wait for the next couple of weeks. Feeling frustrated is a way when you not find the best stylist.

Having an online salon can have a different tactics in terms of business industry. (Alexei Kouleshov, 2011). According to him booking for the salon has greatly improved to the world. In the past, customers will go to the salon and personally check the schedule of desired salon stylist and designers so you can make an appointment. According to him now the advantage is you can make choices of the services offered made by the salons. On his article there are several options of contacting a salon. One is the phone booking for salons which you can use your phone in contacting a specific salon, and the other one is the online booking system its uses a World Wide Web because of the cyber world many business owners realize how effective the cyber world or internet is.

The process for booking in the online salon is not complicated. You simply log-in in the specific data that they wanted to know, the time of your availability and the stylist that you really wanted. Having an online is such a really advantage of some business owners. Advertising through internet is a way to communicate with other people like Netizens. StyleSeat Salon (2011) used an online booking for their customers. Customers can make appointments online. StyleSeat has booked more than 2 million appointments, adding up to more than $100 million in business for beauty professionals. Veronica Belmont, stated that in Style seat “It’s much more convenient for my schedule,” an on-the-go technology and gaming web video host in San Francisco. She used StyleSeat to find a hair and makeup artist for her wedding last fall and to have her hair done before a tech awards show last month. Aileen Lee agrees on what Belmont says. She said that “People are getting used to convenience and access,” deciding to get your nails done or your hair cut, you can just simply log-in through internet and book your appointment there. It only takes 30 seconds and you can have this reservation on you. Anita Chan, a licensed aesthetician, opened her skincare studio about three months ago in San Francisco’s Japan town. Previously, she had operated her business out of her home while – for about two years – she
also juggled a job as an international flight attendant. Through the use StyleSeat, she has been able to move beyond Facebook to have a presence on a beauty-specific site. She also uses StyleSeat to communicate with clients and make booking appointments easier. Chan also said that “It saves me so much time.”

Beauty Is Found in Exceptional but Not in Commonplace

Beauty, by definition, is that which moves us or impacts us significantly. Some would argue that beauty is found everywhere, from the flowers to the stars. But others would state that true beauty is found only in rare, special instances. After weighing the evidence, it is certain that beauty is the province of the exceptional, not the commonplace. People are moved most by things that they rarely experience, not the things they experience every day.

Those that would argue that true beauty i s everywhere might point to the beauty of a flower, or the starlit night. These exp eriences are c ertainly common, but do they show that true b eauty is commonplace? Flowers might b e considered beautiful, but how often does a person stop to look at or appreciate every flower? Flowers are so common that in many cases, they are ignored or viewed as nothing special. However, on those rare occasions- exceptional occasions, one might say-when we want to commemorate an event or express emotion, we notice the beauty of flowers. Thus, it is not the commonplace flower that strikes us as beautiful, but the exceptional situations themselves that move us to appreciate the flower.

Now consider the exceptional. L eonardo da Vinci ‘s Mona Lisa is surely one of the most exceptional, and b eautiful, paintings ever created. Fe;w p e ople who view the painting are not moved by the sheer beauty of it, and the Mona Lisa is instantly recognized as a masterpiece of art. And yet, there have been literally millions of paintings produced in human history. Is every single one of them b eautiful? Does every one of those paintings have the impact that da Vinci ‘s does? Of course not. In order to find beauty, we must separate the exceptional cases from the common ones. True b eauty is such because it stands out from the masses of the average and pedestrian.

Like da Vinci ‘s Mona Lisa, the cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris is an exceptional, and exceptionally b eautiful, object. Churches and cathedrals line the streets of most major cities in Western Europe, but few p ossess the renown of Notre Dame, one of the most beautiful cathedrals in the world. Compared to a common church or cathedral, Notre Dame is truly awe-inspiring;

Victor Hugo used the building as the backdrop for his magnificent book The Hunchback of Notre Dame and thousands of tourists travel untold miles to view the cathedral. That sort of beauty is not p ossessed by just any church on the corner. In conclusion, it ‘s clear that true beauty is found not in the commonplace, but in the exceptional. The Mona Lisa and Notre Dame Cathedral are both exceptional examples of fairly commonplace things and it is thes e exceptions that are noted a s truly b eautiful. If anything, the commonplace serves only as a contrast so that we can understand what true b eauty really is.

Cosmetic Surgery Is Moving Toward Multiethnic Beauty Ideals

“The increasing number of nonwhites getting cosmetic surgery is helping society accelerate from a crawl to a full-bore sprint toward one truly melted, fusion community.”

In the following viewpoint, Anupreeta Das questions whether minorities go under the knife to look more Caucasian. She suggests that as ethnically ambiguous beauties emerge in entertainment and the media, many African American, Asian, and Latino cosmetic-surgery patients want changes that harmonize with their ethnic features. In fact, Das states more surgeons today are specializing in race-specific procedures. This blending and reducing of racial characteristics through cosmetic surgery allow minorities to fit in with beauty standards that are moving away from a Caucasian ideal, she claims. Das is a journalist based in Boston.

As you read, consider the following questions:
1.As stated by Das, how do rhinoplasty procedures differ among Caucasians, African Americans, and Asian Americans?

2.Why did Jewish people embrace cosmetic surgery, according to the viewpoint?

3.According to Das, what do critics say about the increase of ethnic models in the fashion industry?

For almost a century, the women who have turned to cosmetic surgery to achieve beauty—or some Hollywood-meets-Madison Avenue version of it—were of all ages, shapes, and sizes but almost always of one hue: white. But now, when there seems to be nothing that a few thousand dollars can’t fix, women of color are clamoring in skyrocketing numbers to have their faces and bodies nipped, snipped, lifted, pulled, and tucked. This is a step forward, right? In the land of opportunity, we applaud when barriers break down and more people get to partake in the good life, as it were.

There are many explanations for the new willingness of minorities to go under the knife: their swelling numbers and disposable income, the popularization of cosmetic surgery and its growing acceptance as a normal beauty routine, and its relative affordability. What’s significant are the procedures minorities are choosing. More often than not, they’re electing to surgically narrow the span of their nostrils and perk up their noses or suture their eyelids to create an extra fold. Or they’re sucking out the fat from buttocks and hips that, for their race or ethnicity, are typically plump. It all could lead to one presumption: These women are making themselves look more white—or at least less ethnic.

But perhaps not to the extent some suppose. “People want to keep their ethnic identity,” says Dr. Arthur Shektman, a Wellesley-based plastic surgeon. “They want some change, but they don’t really want a white nose on a black face.” Shektman says not one of his minority patients—they make up about 30 percent of his practice, up from about 5 percent 10 years ago—has said, “I want to look white.” He believes this is evidence that the dominant Caucasian-centered idea of blond, blue-eyed beauty is giving way to multiple “ethnic standards of beauty,” with the likes of Halle Berry, Jennifer Lopez, and Lucy Liu as poster girls.

“No way” is the answer Tamar Williams of Dorchester gives when asked if her desire to surgically reduce the width of her nose and get a perkier tip was influenced by a Caucasian standard. “Why would I want to look white?” Growing up, the 24-year-old African-American bank teller says, she longed for a nose that wasn’t quite so wide or flat or big for her face. “It wasn’t that I didn’t like it,” Williams says. “I just wanted to change it.” Hoping to become a model, she thinks the nose job she got in November [2007] will bring her a lifetime of happiness and opportunity. “I was always confident. But now I can show off my nose.”

Yet others are less convinced that the centuries-old fixation on Caucasian beauty—from the Mona Lisa to Pamela Anderson—has slackened. “I’m not ready to put to rest the idea that the white ideal has not permeated our psyches,” says Janie Ward, a professor of Africana Studies at Simmons College. “It is still shaping our expectations of what is beautiful.”

A Peculiar Fusion

Whether or not the surging number of minority patients is influenced by a white standard, one point comes with little doubt: The $12.4 billion-a-year plastic surgery industry is adapting its techniques to meet this demand. The American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS), for example, has in recent months held meetings on subjects ranging from Asian upper-eyelid surgery to so-called ethnic rhinoplasty. The discussion will come to Boston this summer [2007] when the academy will host a five-day event that will include sessions on nose reshaping techniques tailored to racial groups. And increasingly, plastic surgeons are wooing minorities—who make up one-third of the US population—by advertising specializations in race-specific surgeries and using a greater number of nonwhite faces on their Web sites.

It could be that these new patients are not trying to erase the more obvious markers of their ethnic heritage or race, but simply to reduce them. In the process, they’re pursuing ethnic and racial ambiguity. Take Williams. With her new smaller nose and long, straight hair, the African-American woman seems to be toying with the idea of ambiguity. And maybe we shouldn’t be surprised. The intermingling of ethnicities and races—via marriages, friendships, and other interactions—has created a peculiar fusion in this country. It’s the great mishmash where Christmas and Hanukkah and Kwanzaa are celebrated in one long festive spirit, where weddings mix Hindi vows with a chuppah, where California-Vietnamese is a cuisine, where Eminem can be “black” and Beyonce can go blond. And the increasing number of nonwhites getting cosmetic surgery is helping society accelerate from a crawl to a full-bore sprint toward one truly melted, fusion community.

There were 11.5 million cosmetic procedures done in 2005, including surgical ones such as face lifts and rhinoplasties and nonsurgical ones such as Botox shots and collagen injections. One out of every five patients was of African, Asian, or Hispanic descent (separate statistics aren’t available for white versus nonwhite Hispanics). According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, the number of minority patients undergoing cosmetic procedures increased from 300,000 in 1997 to 2 million in 2005. Although the total demand for cosmetic procedures also increased—from 2 million in 1997 to 11.5 million in 2005—the rate of increase for minorities is higher than the overall rate. (Women account for more than nine-tenths of all cosmetic procedures.)

Different ethnic and racial groups favor different procedures. Statistics compiled by the AAFPRS show that in 2005, more than six out of every 10 African-Americans getting cosmetic surgery had nose jobs. Unlike rhinoplasties performed on Caucasians, which may fix a crooked bridge or shave off a hump, doctors say African-American and Asian-American nose reshaping usually leads to narrower nostrils, a higher bridge, and a pointier tip.

For Asian-Americans, eyelid surgery—either the procedure to create an eyelid fold, often giving the eye a more wide-open appearance, or a regular eye lift to reduce signs of aging—is popular. According to the AAFPRS, 50 percent of Asian patients get eyelid surgery. Dr. Min Ahn, a Westborough-based plastic surgeon who performs Asian eyelid surgery, says only about half of the Asian population is born with some semblance of an eyelid crease. “Even if Asians have a preexisting eyelid crease, it is lower and the eyelid is fuller.” For those born without the crease, he says, creating the double eyelid is “so much a part of the Asian culture right now.” It’s probable that this procedure is driving the Asian demand for eyelid surgeries.

Breast augmentation and rhinoplasty top the list of preferred procedures for patients of Hispanic origin, followed by liposuction. Asian-Americans also choose breast implants, while breast reduction—the one procedure eligible for insurance coverage—is the third most preferred choice for African-American women after nose reshaping and liposuction. Doctors say African-American women typically use liposuction to remove excess fat from their buttocks and hips—two areas in which a disproportionate number of women of this race store fat.

The Culture of Self-Improvement

Of course, the assimilative nature of society in general has always demanded a certain degree of conformity and adaptation of every group that landed on American shores. People have adjusted in ways small and large—such as by changing their names and learning new social mores. Elizabeth Haiken, a San Francisco Bay area historian and the author of the 1997 book Venus Envy: A History of Cosmetic Surgery, says ethnic minorities may use plastic surgery as a way to fit in to the mainstream, just as another group used it in the early 20th century. “The first group to really embrace cosmetic surgery was the Jews,” says Haiken. Her research indicates that during the 1920s, when cosmetic surgery first became popular in the United States, being Jewish was equated with “being ugly and un-American,” and the Jewish nose was the first line of attack. Most rhinoplasties therefore sought to reduce its distinct characteristics and bring it more in line with the preferred straighter shape of the Anglo-Saxon nose.

That people would go to such extremes to change their appearance should come as no surprise. “Going back to early 20th-century culture, there is a deep-seated conviction that you are what you look like,” Haiken says. “It’s not your family, your birth, or your heritage, it’s all about you. And your looks and appearance and the way you present yourself will determine who you are.” In the initial sizing-up, the face is the fortune. Physical beauty becomes enmeshed with success and happiness.

Plastic surgeons commonly say that minorities today choose surgery for the same reasons as whites—to empower, better, and preserve themselves. “It’s the universal desire to maintain youthfulness, and it doesn’t change from group to group,” says Dr. Frank Fechner, a Worcester-based plastic surgeon.

The culture of self-improvement that surrounds Americans has also made plastic surgery more permissible in recent years. “Making oneself over—one’s home, one’s car, one’s breasts—is now a part of the American life cycle,” writes New York Times columnist Alex Kuczynski in her 2006 book, Beauty Junkies: Inside Our $15 Billion Obsession With Cosmetic Surgery. “Doctors have sold us on the notion that surgery … is merely part of the journey toward enhancement, the beauty outside ultimately reflecting the beauty within.” Nothing captures this journey better than the swarm of plastic surgery TV shows such as ABC’s Extreme Makeover, Fox’s The Swan, and FX’s Nip/Tuck. These prime-time televised narratives of desperation and triumph, with the scalpel in the starring role of savior, have also helped make plastic surgery more widely accepted. Through sanitized, pain-free, 60-minute capsules showcasing the transformation of ordinary folks, reality TV has sold people on the notion that the Cinderella story is a purchasable, everyday experience that everyone deserves.

Mei-Ling Hester, a 43-year-old Taiwanese-American hairdresser on Newbury Street, believes in plastic surgery as a routine part of personal upkeep. So when her eyelids started to droop and lose their crease, she rushed to Ahn, the plastic surgeon. He sucked the excess fat out while maintaining, he says, “the Asian characteristic” of her eyelids. Hester also regularly gets Botox injected into her forehead and is considering liposuction. “I feel great inside,” she says. With hair tinted a rich brown and eyes without lines or puffiness, her beauty is groomed and serene. “I work out, I eat right, I use good products on my face. It was worth it,” she says of her surgery. Although Hester says she pursues plastic surgery for betterment and self-fulfillment, she recognizes her privileged status as someone born with the double eyelids and sharper nose so prized in much of the Asian community. “I just got lucky, because if you look at my sister, she’s got a flat nose.” Another sister was born without the eyelid crease and had it surgically created, says Hester.

The concept of the double eyelid as beautiful comes from the West. “For many, many years, the standards for beauty have been Western standards that say you have to have a certain shape to the eye, and the eyelid has to have a fold,” says Dr. Ioannis Glavas, a facial plastic surgeon specializing in eyelid surgery, with practices in Cambridge, New York City, and Athens. Sometimes, the demand for bigger eyes can be extreme. Glavas recalls one young Asian-American woman he saw who, in addition to wanting a double eyelid procedure, asked him to snip off some of the bottom lid to expose more of the white. “I had to say no to her,” he says.

Glavas says both Asian women and men demand the double eyelid surgery because it is a way of looking less different by reducing an obvious ethnic feature. Presumably, Asian patients aren’t aiming to look white by getting double eyelids (after all, African-Americans and other minorities have double eyelids), but the goal is social and cultural assimilation, or identification with some dominant aesthetic standard.

Across-the-Board Appeal

In recent years, the dominant aesthetic standard in American society has moved away from the blond, blue-eyed Caucasian woman to a more ethnically ambiguous type. Glossy magazines are devoting more pages to this melting-pot aesthetic, designed (like the new Barbies) for across-the-board appeal. Today’s beautiful woman comes in many colors, from ivory to cappuccino to ebony. Her hair can be dark and kinky, and she might even show off a decidedly curvy derriere—a feature that has actually started to prompt some white women to get gluteal augmentation, or butt implants.

However, critics say these are superficial changes to what is essentially a Caucasian-inspired ideal—the big-eyed, narrow-nosed, pillow-lipped, large-breasted, boyishly thin apparition. “There has been a subtle change in the kind of models you see in Victoria’s Secret catalogs or Vogue,” says Dr. Fred Stucker, the head of facial plastic surgery at Louisiana State University, Shreveport. But “they take the black girl who has the high cheekbones, narrow nose, and pouty lips.” It’s not uncommon, he says, to find “a white face with dark skin.”

Going by the recent surge of minorities demanding plastic surgery, it is plausible that this attempt by canny marketers and media types to promote a darker-skinned but still relatively uniform ideal is working. After all, they are simply following the money. According to the University of Georgia’s Selig Center for Economic Growth, which compiles an annual report on the “multicultural economy” in the United States, minorities had a combined buying power of several trillion dollars in 2006. In 2007, the disposable income of Hispanics is expected to rise to $863 billion, while African-Americans will collectively have $847 billion to spend. By 2010, Asians are expected to have buying power totaling $579 billion. And all of these groups are showing a greater willingness to spend it on themselves and the things they covet, including cosmetic surgery.

Katie Marcial represents exactly this kind of person. The 50-year-old African-American is newly single, holds a well-paying job in Boston, and has no qualms about spending between $10,000 and $20,000 on a tummy tuck and breast surgery. “I’m doing this mainly because I’m economically able to do so,” says Marcial, a Dorchester resident whose clear skin and youthful attire belie her age. With her three children all grown, her money is hers to spend. “I can indulge in a little vanity,” she says. Marcial says she chose a young, Asian-American doctor to perform her surgery because “I thought she would know the latest techniques and be sensitive to ethnic skin.”

Historically, plastic surgery has been tailored to Caucasian women. Glavas says that in medical texts, the measurements of symmetry and balance—two widely recognized preconditions of beauty—were made with Caucasian faces in mind. Such practices led to a general sense among minorities that plastic surgery was for whites and kept them away from tinkering with their faces and bodies. But even as the industry now adapts to its new customers, plastic surgeons are divided over whether surgical specialization in various ethnicities and races necessarily caters better to the needs of minority patients. Dr. Julius Few, a plastic surgeon at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine, hails the fact that plastic surgeons are customizing their procedures to focus on minorities, “so it’s not just the one-size-fits-all mentality of saying, well, if somebody’s coming in, regardless, they’re going to look Northern European coming out.” He even sees “a sort of subspecialty” emerging in various ethnic procedures. Meanwhile, Dr. Jeffrey Spiegel, who is chief of facial plastic and reconstructive surgery at Boston University Medical Center and has a large number of nonwhite patients, is skeptical of the notion of specialization in ethnic and racial cosmetic surgery. “It strikes me more as a marketing tool than a real specialization,” he says.

In 1991, Michael Jackson crooned “It don’t matter if you’re black or white.” Jackson’s message about transcending race may have won singalong supporters, but his plastic surgeries did not. His repeated nose jobs and lightened skin color (he has maintained he is not bleaching but is using makeup to cover up the signs of vitiligo, a skin condition) were perceived by minorities—especially African-Americans—as an attempt to look white. Doctors say that “Don’t make me look like Michael Jackson” is a popular refrain among patients. “People were put off by dramatic surgeries and preferred subtle changes,” says Shektman, the Wellesley-based plastic surgeon.

The New Melting-Pot Aesthetic

Choices have expanded since then. Minorities can now hold themselves up against more ethnically and racially ambiguous role models that may still trace their roots to the once-dominant Caucasian standard but are becoming more composite and blended. “The concept of ideal beauty is moving toward a mix of ethnic features,” says plastic surgeon Ahn, a Korean-American who is married to a Caucasian. “And I think it’s better.”

The push toward ethnic and racial ambiguity should perhaps be expected, because the cultural churn in American society is producing it anyway. Sure, promoting ambiguous beauty is a strategic move on the part of marketing gurus to cover their bases and appeal to all groups. But it’s also a reflection of reality. Not only are minorities expected to make up about half the American population by 2050, but the number of racially mixed people is increasing tremendously. The number of mixed-race children has been growing enough since the 1970s that in 2000 the Census Bureau created a new section in which respondents could self-identify their race; nearly 7 million people (2.4 percent of the population) identified themselves as belonging to more than one race.

For minorities, this new melting-pot beauty aesthetic—perhaps the only kind of aesthetic standard that befits a multiethnic and multicultural society—is an achievable and justifiable goal. Increasingly, advertisements use models whose blue eyes and dreadlocked hair or almond-shaped eyes and strong cheekbones leave you wondering about their ethnic origins. The ambiguous model might have been dreamed up on a computer or picked from the street. But advertisers value her because she is a blended product—someone everyone can identify with because she cannot be immediately defined by race or ethnicity. By surgically blending or erasing the most telling ethnic or racial characteristics, cosmetic surgery makes ambiguity possible and allows people of various ethnicities and races to fit in. For the Jewish community in the 1920s, fitting in may have had to do with imitating a Caucasian beauty ideal. For minorities today, it’s a melting-pot beauty ideal that is uniquely American. How appropriate this ambiguity is, in a culture that expects conformity even as it celebrates diversity.

Beauty Therapy Stone Therapy Assignment Brief

  1. Research the history and origins of stone therapy massage and how it may be incorporated with other therapy related treatments.

Massage is one of the oldest forms of hands-on-healing known, people from virtually every culture have used a combination of touch, heat or thermotherapy and stones as therapeutic tools. The three main cultures, which have heavily influenced how modern-day hot stone massage has evolved, the Chinese, the Native Americans and the Hawaiians although Egyptian, Ayurvedic and many other traditional healing arts are also said to have used stones and heat. One of the first recorded uses of stones for healing was by Ancient Chinese a medical practitioner who regularly used various shaped stones known as Bian Stones to treat disease. The use of Moxabustion burning of the herb mugwort helped to add heat to these treatments. Native Americans are well known for their Sweat Lodges, which are similar to modern-day Saunas. The use of heated stones on the lower abdomen to relieve cramps was another common Native American practice. Most therapists who incorporate hot stones into their massage routine agree that the Hawaiians had a major part to play in how this form of massage is applied today. This is particularly true for Hahana Stone Massage. Customary uses included wrapping hot stones in leaves with certain therapeutic properties ti leaves and placing on sore muscles to reduce pain, like using a heat pack. .

Modern-day hot stone massage therapy is a truly unique style of massage, has been gaining popularity through-out the world after being re-discovered in the United States in 1993. The story is that a massage therapist named Mary Nelson, who was suffering from repetitive use injuries in the shoulders and wrists, was having a sauna with her niece and which had stones in. Mary picked up some of the hot stones and started massaging her niece with them, she felt great. The first style of modern-day hot stone massages therapy was called ‘LaStone Therapy’. Almost every Spa in Europe, America and Australia offers hot stone massage therapy on their treatment plans. There are a verity number of different styles of stone massage, hot stone massage and cold stone massage these can be incorporated into different treatments like body massage as a pre heat treatment to warm up the muscle to aid muscle manipulation, manicures placed in between the fingers, pedicures placed in between the toes, facials during the massage to aid lymph drainage over the face, sports or remedial massage to relieve muscle pain or tension in the muscle and Indian head massage to aid in relaxation.

2. Explain how you would prepare the treatment area for stone therapy massage taking into account the following aspects: heating, lighting, privacy, noise level, hygiene and finishing touches.

When you enter the treatment room you should check the floor is clean and there is no oil spillages on the floor, if there is wipe up with warm soapy water and dry with paper towels, you should place clean bed sheet on the treatment bed, cover with clean towels and bed roll with modesty towels and a flannel available for wiping over the client feet at the beginning and end of the massage. The sides should be wiped down with surgical spirit, sink should be clean with hand soap available. You need to place an hand towel down or tissue to place the stone heater on, the machine should be clean and pat tested, a quick check of the wires and that the machine is in working order shouldn’t take more then a minute, all stones in the machine should be clean and oil free, you should have a bowl to fill the heater with water, the water should be level with the stones. You should turn the machine to pre heat for them to be at working temperature 55C for the treatment. You should place a towel next to the machine for when you take the stones out of the heater, a bowl of cool water should be next to the towel ready incase the stone need cooling down before applying heat to the client, you should check the thermometer in the machine to see the temperature of the water, if the water is at working temperature change the machine to operating range to keep the stone at the correct heat. You would have a small bowl with tissue and a cotton bud in to patch test the oil the client has chosen. Tissue should be placed on the floor by the bed for when the client gets off the bed to stop then from slipping from any oil still on their feet.

Heating: making sure the room isn’t to hot or cold for the client as to much heat can make client feel faint or even collapse, if the room in to cold the client may not receive the most of the benefits from the treatment and they may not fell comfortable.

Lighting: there should be mood lighting or a dimmer switch to aid in relaxation during the treatment, as a bright light may cause the client to tense up and not relax which can ruin the experience for them.

Privacy: the treatment should take place in a private treatment room so other client or therapist doesn’t disturb the client during the treatment so the client can relax and receive all the benefits of the massage. Some client can feel self-conscious about their body and a private room can make them feel comfortable and not exposed.

Noise Level: there sound be no loud noises in or near the treatment room, relaxing music should be playing in the back ground to aid in relaxation but not to loud that it disturbs the client or any other client receiving treatments.

Hygiene: all treatment room should be cleaned before and after client enter, the bed cover should be replaced with clean one, dirty towels should be placed into the wash with clean ones to replaced them, fresh bed roll placed on the floor and bed, sinks should be wiped down after every treatment, any oil spillages should be cleaned up with warm soapy water, bins emptied with fresh bin liners in, fresh clean dressing gowns in the room for client use, all side be wiped down with surgical spirit, all stone washed and dried after every treatment and stone heater cleaned after every treatment, therapists should wash hands before and after treatment, therapists should have excellent personal hygiene, sort nails free of nail polish, hair tided up, plain day make up, clean fresh uniform.

Finishing Touches: to make yourself stand out you could place battery candles around the room, bath rose soap petals on the bed that the can take home after the treatment, have an oil burner in the corner to have a relaxing and welcoming smell in the room, offer rose quartz water after treatment or herbal teas to complement the treatment. This will set you apart from other therapist as it is these things that clients remember about the treatment and what will bring them back in future and they will recommend you to friends and family

3. Describe how you would adapt a massage routine to suit the individual client’s physical characteristics to include each of the following: weight, muscle tone, age, health and skin condition.

Every stone therapy massage is different as you would adapt the massage to suit the clients needs as everyone is an individual and have different problem areas needing more concentrating on or just having the massage to aid in relaxation, what ever the reason you would always be changing and adapting the massage in order to achieve the client outcome of the massage. There are many factors that could change the routine of the massage:

Weight: weight of the client is a factor as this will determine the size of the stones, amount of oil needed and the area the therapist will be working on, you may find that people with endomorph body types maybe sensitive to heat and pressure but have good muscle tone as with someone with ectomorph body type maybe able to stand a lot of heat and deeper pressure.

Muscle Tone: clients with good muscle tone will feel the heat off the stones in the muscle in which this will help eliminate any tension in the muscle fibres, younger clients tend to have better muscle tone than older clients as with age the elasticity in the skin and muscle tend to weaken in which when lying down you may not see a lot of muscle areas but more boney areas in which you have to be careful not to cause the client any discomfort as the massage is meant to be both relaxing and enjoyable.

Age: age is a big factor in determining the pressure of the massage and the heat of the stones, younger client will have more elasticity and collagen in the skin which helps with the stone to stretch the skin and a smoother gliding motion over the surface, they will be able to stand more heat on the skin and tend not to bruise from the pressure of the stones on the muscles, older clients have less elasticity and collagen in which during the massage the skin takes longer to go back during the massage in which the skin may bundle up and cause the client discomfort, the client may bruise a lot more easily and more quickly due to age and clients may be more sensitive to the heat from the rocks.

Health: if the client is in good health they will and has a good diet stone therapy

Skin Condition:

4. Describe in detail stone therapy massage techniques and how these may be adapted to suit your clients considering general body types, muscle tone and skin conditions.

Body Types:
Taking into consideration the clients body type, you may find they don’t have much muscle on their back if they have an ectomorph body, if they are mesomorph they will have defined muscles or if they are endomorph they may have a bigger frame but not a lot of muscle, client can fall into more than one of these categories, when starting the massage with effleurage you can manual and visually assess the client body type to get a good a idea of how much pressure you should apply during the massage although some clients with a small build may like a firm massage while others with a bigger build may not be able to handle the pressure.

Muscle Tone:

Effleurage:
Effleurage is used for spreading the oil over the client’s body and warming the muscle and tissues, this technique is used to begin the end the massage. Begin with your hand and stroke with superficial effleurage along the area to be massaged first, this is a good movement to manual check the muscle tone and skin condition of the client, while still doing effleurage pick up the stones and introduce the texture of the stone to the skin. Take care over bony areas and that you can do more transverse effleurage, down the body, working along the length of the muscle fibres.

Stroking:
A gliding stroke is often performed with the outer edge of the stone, which reduces the amount of pressure applied, and it is really useful for finishing the movement at a lymph node to aid drainage.

Combing/ stripping:
This is a deep, intense stroke using the stone on its edge, working the muscle along its entire length from its origin to its insertion. This helps pull the muscle fibres outward and removes tension, and is best performed when the stone has lost some of its heat, so use this after the first round of effleurage to create a deep release and stretch of soft tissue.

Petrissage:
Pressing and releasing of the tissue that you would achieve with the hands can be achieved with the stones either flat or for deep concentrated work using the edges. Though you do not have as much contact with the body as you do with manual massage and cannot judge the extra depth, which the stones give. These kneading movements can be very deep always be aware they can cause bruising, clients may think that pain is part of the treatment and that they must put up with it, there is a certain painful but relaxing feeling in having tension knots removed, it should not be continuously sore. The client should not feel tender afterwards, if they do this is a sign you are going too deeply into the tissue.

Frictions:
Frictions can be simulated with stones by using the edge of the stone, to give mild pressure for a soothing feeling or more concentrated pressure to stimulate the nerve endings. This will entirely depend upon the client, whether they just need tension released or deep tissue manipulation. Alternatively you may miss this movement out altogether if the client wants to fall asleep. Piezoelectric effects or vibrations can be achieved with the stones very successfully. Vibrations can also be achieved by rhythmical tapping of two stones together creating sound – one stays in contact with skin while the other taps it at the top. This causes a transfer of energy to electrical vibration that should gently remind the client of the noise. This method is effective at removing tension knots.

Stone placing:
The stones are placed on or underneath the body, covered by a towel or sheet to prevent burning. Never place stones directly onto the vertebrae or placements before the massage, placement should be after the massage continuing the good relaxing work of the stones and keeps heat in the muscles.

Holding:
The heated stones can be held in the hands to keep the client warm during treatment or for any specific problems in any region. It is good to keep checking with the client that the stone isn’t to hot for them or burning their hands and keep referring back to the client to check that they are comfortable.

5. Research and explain two pre-blend aromatherapy oils used in stone therapy massage and the effects each blend will have on your stone therapy massage.

Stimulating: is recommended for people who feel sluggish, tired and emotionally drained. The benefits and use of this pre-blend is used for strengthening the immune system, uplifting, relieves bloating and indigestion, helps with high blood pressure and asthma, ect.

Essential oils:

Lemon, Cedarwood, Juniper, Prunus, Citrus Peal, Peppermint and Juranium.

Anti Stress: is recommended for people who feel stressed, used for stimulating the lymphatic system, helps reduces headaches, helps reduces cellulite, relieves aches and pains, helps reduce insomnia, respiratory problems, helps reduce panic attacks and anxiety, helps improve self esteem

Essential oils:

Sweet Orange, Sweet Almond, Lavender, Mandarin, Avocado, Weedjurm, Grapefruit, Petitgrain, Ylang Ylang and Margarin.

The effects that the pre-blended oils have on the body when using with stone therapy massage, they will affect the body much quick and spreads though out the body much faster due to the heat stimulating the muscle fibres and blood circulation, the heat enhances the overall effect of the massage faster then manual massage as one movement with the stone massage is equal to ten movements with manual massage. Other benefits of pre-blended oils are: Dramatic improvement in general health and well being, increase in vitality, improvement in the colour and texture of the skin, positive effect on mood and thought, relieves stress, stimulates or soothes the nervous system, eliminates toxic waste from the skin and muscle system, stimulates blood and lymph supply, relieves muscular tension and warms the muscles.

6. Create a client information/after-care advice sheet, to explain the post-treatment restrictions, after-care advice and use of homecare products for stone therapy treatments.

There are many physical and emotional benefits to regular stone massage. Stone massage will soothe away stress and tension, leaving you feeling peaceful, relaxed, revitalized and energized and it is becoming a very popular treatment, perfect for promoting a calm mind, balanced emotions, a stress-free body and for maintaining optimum holistic health. Stone massage feels wonderful and healing, it is relaxing and has a positive effect on the mind, emotions, nervous system, circulation and muscles. After your massage you will usually feel relaxed and be enjoying the benefits of the treatment, however to gain maximum benefit it’s a good idea to follow a few simple guidelines for at least 24 hours and preferably 48 hours after you receive your massage. Try to relax and avoid strenuous activity for the rest of the day Drink plenty of water and avoid alcohol, fizzy drinks and those containing caffeine Eat light meals and avoid heavy or spicy foods

Avoid heat treatments (hot baths, saunas etc)
Avoid smoking or cut down as much as possible
Following your massage you may experience some of the following symptoms for up to 48 hours Aches, pains or mild flu like symptoms
Stuffy, runny or blocked nose
Heightened emotions
Tiredness or fatigue
Increased visits to the toilet
Slight worsening of symptoms
Irritable or weepy
Increased thirst
These symptoms are quite normal and are simply a sign that your body is going through a healing process so try to embrace them as something positive and know they won’t last long.

Judy Jones – beauty, devil, or victim?

“Winter Dreams”, one of the greatest works of F. Scott Fitzgerald, has successfully depicted the downside of the so-called American Dream in his time. The story described the frustration of people who had defined their happiness as material success. Beside the protagonist Dexter Green, there was another character that made readers preoccupied with conflicting ideas after reading the story. She was Judy Jones, the center of Dexter’s winter dreams. In this essay, we will examine this character to see whether she was a statue of woman beauty, a devil who kept hurting other people, or a victim of such a material society.

First of all, we must admit that Judy Jones was a masterpiece of God. When it comes to an attractive girl, we can definitely take Judy Jones for an excellent example. Judy, in the author’s description, was a gorgeous young girl whose charm was composed of a striking appearance, a great sense of style, and a magnetic personality.

To plenty of men, Judy was an extremely adorable girl with whom they couldn’t help falling in love. Almost every man in the story had to admit that Judy was greatly good-looking. Dexter, the protagonist, had recognized Judy’s potential great beauty when she was just eleven. He depicted little Judy as an “inexpressively lovely” girl who “brings no end of misery to a great number of men”. When Judy turned twenty, she became an irresistible beauty with a slender figure, passionate eyes, picturesquely beautiful complexion, and especially, an appealing down-turning mouth that “gave a continual impression of intense life and vitality”.

Additionally, Judy’s stylishness made her become more appealing. Her costumes not only perfectly fitted her but also made her stand out in any situation. She once showed up at the golf court so gracefully in “a blue gingham dress”, which got many men’s attention. Another time, she suddenly appeared in such a healthy and attractive manner on a racing motor-boat with an eye-catching pink bathing-suite on her beautiful body that Dexter couldn’t do anything else but complying with all her requests. When Dexter met her again at the dancing club after a long time, she still looked as pretty as a doll in a sparkling gold dress.

Moreover, Judy’s charm was fortified with a special personality. Though a slender girl, she not only knew how to swim or dance but also knew how to surf on the sea and drive a motor-boat with no difficulty. She was always aware of her charm, always confident, and friendly towards the man she was interested in. Also, she was not afraid of actively asking a new acquaintance on a date and did make it become a romantic and memorable date than ever. That she knew how to make a man happy with fulfillment was so true since Dexter, during his life, would never forget the moment (though short) with Judy on the dark sun-porch, deeply in the passionate kisses. Hence, generally speaking, Judy was a dream girl for plenty of men.

What is more beside Judy Jones’ great looks? Surprisingly, it is a not very beautiful soul, or critically speaking, a cruel nature of a devil. As an eleven-year-old girl, Judy Jones had adopted an incorrect etiquette. She was so rude when addressing Dexter as “Boy” while she was obviously younger than him. Besides, she couldn’t conceal her bad temper when having something unsatisfying. Not seeing any caddies available to serve her, Judy vented her anger on Mrs. Hilda-her nurse by “taking one of the clubs, hitting it on the ground with violence”, and wildly shouting at Mrs. Hilda that “You damn little mean old thing!”. When Judy entered adulthood, the cruel side of her nature became clearer. One of her disgusting qualities was once again the impoliteness. She seemed amazingly unconcerned and unapologetic when hitting Mr. T.A. Hedrick in his stomach with a stray ball.

Furthermore, Judy Jones was a statue of a material girl who judged a man only by his material success and seemed to ignore the moral value. On the first date with Dexter, Judy straightforwardly told him about her recent upsetting love affair with a man who, in her words, “was as poor as a church-mouse”, and boldly asked Dexter “Are you poor?”. What if Dexter had said “Yes”? Logically, she might have thrown him out of her life at once!

Judy Jones’ cruelty was explicitly revealed through her selfishness, wilfulness and impulse-driven behavior. She was always trifling with others’ affection. When she was interested in a man, she did not hesitate to take advantage of her charm to achieve her goal – making him crazily love her. Nevertheless, once losing the excitement, she mercilessly kicked the guy out of her current life and looked for a new delight. Her wickedness, however, did not stop at the “new one in, old one out” attitude towards love. When the miserable neglected man gradually forgot her and was about to start a new life, she tried to draw his attention back by “granting him a brief honeyed hour, which encouraged him to tag along for a year or so longer”, then left him, hurt him again, and of course, non-stop looked for another interesting guy to fulfill her desire. She acted wickedly regardless of others’ feelings as if she had had the right to do it. Dexter was one of the most miserable victims of Judy’s love games. He was suffering not only from being neglected again by Judy but also from regretting giving serious hurt to his fiancé Irene Scherer and her parents. Obviously, Judy Jones’ selfishness had given pains to plenty of people.

Why was Judy Jones such a disgusting devil? Were there any sensible reasons for this, which are worth our sympathy? Firstly, Judy Jones was born with a silver spoon in her mouth and with a great beauty that could help her win almost every man’s heart. She lived an extravagant life with plenty of elite suitors always around. That she could acquire what she wanted effortlessly made her appreciate nothing. She hardly had any meaningful interests in her life except flirting men around. She assumed that her radiant beauty was a master key to the happiness, but her upsetting married life at the end of the story proved that she was completely wrong. Her unhappiness afterwards resulted from the emptiness of her soul and an intensive desire for what is so-called happiness that she couldn’t know how to achieve and even couldn’t define. That was why she once cried and complained to Dexter: “I’m more beautiful than anybody else. Why can’t I be happy?”. The fact that she kept hunting for joy with different men gives us an impression of her illusion and disorientation in her journey to seek happiness. No matter how popular, rich, and even talented a man was, Judy couldn’t find a permanent sense of fulfillment with him. She just sought a man to fill the emptiness in her soul. Secondly, we must take a look at the society in which Judy grew up – a society that placed material success over moral values. Therefore, that Judy Jones adopted such stereotype and judged a person by his wealth was not incomprehensible. Poor Judy failed to understand what true love was and consequently, did not know how to have it. The last reason we can think of is the lack of adequate parental guidance from her childhood. Her parents were rich, but like other people in that society, they must have concentrated only on earning money to fortify their social status. Through the story, readers can see that the bond between the Jones’ members appeared not to be so close. While Irene’s parents were described as kind and caring people, Mr. and Mrs. Jones were usually said to be absent from home. Moreover, we can notice the image of a Judy surrounded by her servants and boyfriends, but we hardly ever find any interaction between Judy and her parents. Living prosperously but being neglected by parents, Judy was given a chance to develop such a misconception of love and happiness.

Judy’s endless search for satisfaction seemed to burn itself out by the end of the story. She got married to Lud Simms – a bad husband. She lost her good looks and devoted herself to her children. Judy Jones, the symbol of Dexter’s larger-than-life dreams, then became a boring Judy Simms. Many readers may feel satisfied with this ending since Judy ought to pay for all the pains she had caused to other people. However, if we give ourselves a pause for rethinking, we may somehow feel sorry for her. Judy was, by no means, a devil from birth. She was just a victim of the society in which she was born and grew up. To conclude, if we could give something to this character, we would give her just a moderate look, not a great beauty. Were it so, she wouldn’t have had any “weapon” to hurt so many men, and she might have got a more peaceful life.

Beauty in Nature

The world has come to a point where there is no turning back; where we can’t undo what is already done. We have forgotten the importance of the use of natural resources we need to survive. We have also forgotten our responsibility to the world, so that it can remain healthy and alive. I fear if we continue polluting our environment and not help it improve itself, we are going to have nothing towards the end. The world needs a better place for everyone to enjoy, no matter what living situation you are in. Everything relates to one another, water, air, energy, sun light, humans, and specially animals; we are all useful to one another. However, I believe that it is possible for us to improve our living situation, and make our world healthier to live in. It is not impossible to do, but if everyone is willing to work together and start making changes there will be a positive effect towards the world. We live and breathe toxic and factory pollution in our everyday lives without even realizing the damage that we have caused. Every year the atmosphere thickens with air pollution and lakes are becoming more toxic with the waste that we dump. Not realizing what we have done to the world and what we are taking advantage of, should be the red flag for us, telling us that we need to change our living situations now. However, being asked to cut down on some of our resources that we use in our everyday life would be difficult to do because some wouldn’t know how to survive without them. We need the supplies that we are used to because it is what we know and what we are used too. On the other hand, what is the harm on trying something new; taking shorter showers, picking up trash that is around you in public areas, buying recyclable pencils, or plastic bottles? Humans are not the only ones who live on the world; animals are very much involved too. Animals need to feel safe; they need a home to live in, and cutting down trees destroying their homes are not the answers. Animals suffer every day to find a home. For example Polar bears are going extinct because there is it too much heat in the atmosphere, heat is beginning to melt off the remaining ice that is left for them. Forest animals are being forced to live in different habitats because trees are being cut down for shelter and living supplies for the humans.

If the world continues to cut down trees and make more land for people to live on, there are going to be no trees left. Animals are defenseless against humans; they don’t have a voice as humans do. Someone needs to speak up for the animals, and protect their homes. Nature can be seen as a beautiful thing, yet we are killing off those beautiful things in the world. We do not do it intentionally, but we are killing off our natural resources just by living our daily lives. We are killing off our trees, so we can have paper and money so we can spend more on paper, houses, and fire. When one tree falls, another should be planted. This can help and we wouldn’t run out of trees. Cows, chicken, pigs, animals are getting killed off so we can have food on our plate, and have clothes on our backs so we won’t freeze during the winter nights. Even though we need nature to survive there is always a negative effect using it. There are many ways that we can improve our world. Although it might be difficult to fix the damage that was already caused there is still hope for improvement. If we start off small and work ourselves to the top improving the environment would become easier each year. We should turn off the lights after exiting the room, and install sensor lights in every house making sure that energy is not being wasted. We can cut back on our water supply when we are in the shower or washing the dishes and watering the grass, by setting a timer on when to stop. We can create new technologies, so we are able to manage the amount of smoke that comes out in factories.

We can also help the environment by getting others to join beach cleanups. Having more people picking up trash can help in many ways. Cleaning up the beach made me think about the other things that can help this world to survive a bit longer. It is not impossible to do because humans are the main source; we are the ones that need little something from everything and from everyone. It is not hard to pick up unwanted trash around you at the park or the streets, it is rare when people do that but little things like that can change a lot. Picking up a broken glass from the beach might have saved someone’s foot from running into it; picking up the burned rubber from the fire pit might have saved a bird from shocking to death. One thing leads to another, everything matters in life weather if it is the smallest thing in the world. Picking up trash in the beach made it look cleaner and made it look like a beach that people would enjoy going to. Going to the beach has encouraged me to go back and enjoy the sound the waves do when they hit the surface. The beach clean was a fun experience to have because it can make you love nature even more by the smell or the sound that it makes. One can enjoy the view of the dolphins when they pass by in little groups, going up and down as if they are saying hi and goodbye each time their head pops out. Protecting and enjoying the beach is important because it is something that was created for us to enjoy the fresh air, and ignore the ugly in the world. In conclusion, if we make small changes now in the way we live, we can avoid huge changes in the future. Scientists, governments and individuals must work together to overcome this threat. Keeping the environment clean and healthy can save many lives infants, teens, and the elderly. Cleaning earth and making it a better place is not in overnight process, it will probably take years to fix, but it is possible.

Innerbeauty vs Outer beauty

It is natural that God made some people naturally beautiful than others in face, color, body and in physical appearance but this is only the outer beauty that can attract anyone by its features while Inner beauty is some thing inside a person or a body, most of the times it does not show up but it exists in person’s heart and soul. Its something inside a person. For most people, outer beauty is easily created by means of a temporary camouflage of creams, scents, ointments, styles, and various kinds of outer wrappings. And although each one of us is entitled to look and feel as attractive as we choose, it is important to also understand that Outer Beauty, by itself, is only one minuscule aspect of our Divine Nature. If we rely upon Outer Beauty alone when we present ourselves to others, this amount do nothing more than creating a false and temporary illusion of who we truly are. The true beauty of a person is not in the face, it is the light in the heart. “True beauty shines through, for the wise can see through the superficiality of perfect skin, or hidebound social judgments.”

Inner beauty for a person is to know their strengths and live with them. Confidence is a natural consequence. But it is also inspiringto see the beauty in life itself. Outer beauty is something one is born with, while innerbeauty is a gift to one’s self. We may not be able to ‘see’ inner beauty in a person, but wecan definitely ‘feel’ it. A person with an inner beauty always touches people aroundthem. I nner strength is reflected in this inner beauty which comes from unconditional faith in god, courage of conviction, positive attitude and a spirit that refuses to get flattened out by the ups and downs of life.

What you are when you are just being yourself, that is inner beauty. It is reflected in how one talks to members of your family or your domestic help. It is your concern for people, your understanding of them, and your sensitivity to their feelings. A person who comes close to embodying these qualities is the one who is really beautiful. One should constantly try to be a ‘beautiful’ person, reinventing one’s self through life’s manifold experiences. Where as if you rely upon the appearance of Outer Beauty alone in their interpersonal relationships, usually have very little, if anything else, to bring into their relationships. And once their temporary and fleeting illusion of Outer Beauty finally vanishes, their unfulfilled and limited true character is all that they have left.

Inner Beauty is an Untarnishable and permanent truth. It is the purest expression of beauty that the soul has to offer. While Outer Beauty is but a temporary and fleeting illusion, Outer Beauty can be used to gain instant and temporary gratification in the physical realm, Inner Beauty is Spiritual Magic which enables the person who possesses it to enjoy permanent contentment in all realms: physical, mental, and spiritual. Inner Beauty is a warm and hypnotic “glow” which radiates from a magical ember that burns deep within the person who possesses it. Inner Beauty is a Divine Essence which cannot be manufactured. And, it is amazing how Inner Beauty can make an “average looking” person radiate with a magnetic glow and a heart-stopping presence. It is a permanent Quality which makes this individual interesting, desirable, trustworthy, and welcome.

Conclusion
Then we come to the conclusion “what’s beautiful? To be yourself-deeply and totally- is the essential. Not to disfigure yourself in the name of ‘beauty’ because everyone else is doing so. How can you know who you are, if you look like everyone else? Inner beauty implies that is just not outward beauty, but a kind of aura- call it spiritual or otherwise- that you have that affects you and people around you. And eventually, if you love yourself truly, you will look beautiful. What you are on the inside reflects on the outside.

Defining Beauty

The word “beauty” can mean an unlimited amount of things to so many people. Some people see beauty as a woman with a small figure, with her hair and makeup done like that of a model in a magazine. Others may see beauty as more of an internal asset, such as a woman giving more to this world than she knows she’ll ever get back. Still, many others may see beauty as something that is unattainable because the definition of it is so ironically undefined and ambiguous, that it may even be seen as non-existent. Beauty is extremely versatile and its definition is often debated because beauty has unlimited definitions. No one’s definition of beauty is wrong. However, it does exist and can be seen with the eyes and felt with the heart.

The first and most commonly referred to definition of beauty is external beauty, or superficial beauty. “Beauty is only skin-deep”, as some people may say. The general public typically views beauty as something that often must be seen to be believed; a girl is not pretty unless she can prove it with appearance. “In the perpetual “body image debate” on Xanga and in the world, there are frequently posts that say, basically: “All sizes can be beautiful! It’s what’s inside that counts anyways!” Multiple commenters will agree with them, and everyone descends into gooey e-group-hugs.

What they’re trying to do… is nice. I won’t argue with “all sizes can be beautiful”– I have my preferences and you have yours, and ideally we won’t bash one group or the other despite those preferences. I also won’t argue with “what’s inside counts,” because it’s obvious that one’s personality directly affects the way one is able to bond with people over time. But, to those who try to proclaim “looks don’t matter,” I say: Bullshit.” (Walker 2010). Whether this mentality is seen as ethically wrong or not, it IS a mentality and it IS acknowledged. If a person believes beauty is solely defined by physical appearance, then that is their individual opinion, and cannot be taken away from them, or marked as “wrong”.

The second form of beauty, most naturally comes to mind as what’s known as “internal beauty”. You’ll most often hear things like “It’s what on the inside that matters!” “Happy girls are the prettiest!” and the infamous “You have a great personality and that’s what matters!” Internal beauty IS what’s on the inside, obviously. Internal beauty is personality, charisma, lovingness, generosity; all the characteristics that typically make a person “beautiful” on the inside. “As I grew up, I began to realize outer beauty was not so important to make someone good. I remember a friend of mine who was so beautiful that every classmate wanted to talk with her, but she was very arrogant. She believed that she could do everything she wanted because she was so beautiful, but she lost friends one by one. My poor friend! But she learned a good lesson: inner beauty is more important than outer beauty. After she learned that, she changed her attitude and made friends again.” (Ji 2010). Many people still believe that inner beauty is as important as outer beauty, while still some believe it is more important. This mentality is not wrong because it makes sense to the people that believe it. It must be acknowledged whether people think personality is more important than makeup, or not.

And still, some people believe and feel that beauty can only be defined by the person who feels it. In other words, my internal and external beauty is examined and defined by the rest of the world, without me having anything to say about it. This particular definition says that that individual person, in this example being me; that I get to say whether I’m beautiful or not based off of how I feel, not the rest of the world, based off of one or both of the previous definitions. It is simply, what you define yourself as. “I know I looked beautiful that morning. Perhaps not to the young man holding his toddler in his arms who rode the elevator with me; perhaps not to the friend I met for lunch, a true believer in Botox; perhaps not to passersby on the street; but I knew it for a certainty. I was beautiful. I don’t believe that inner beauty is sufficient in this cruel world.

That’s the pap one tells a child. I don’t believe that positive thinking improves your skin tone or that loving or being loved changes the shape of your nose or restores the thickness and color of hair, but I do know that there is a way of being beautiful, even as age takes its toll, that has something to do with the spirit filling with joy, something to do with the union with another human being, with the sense of having done well at something enormously important, like making happy a man who has made you happy often enough.” (Roiphe 2012).

Beauty cannot be defined as a single thing. It has no bounds; no limits as to say how beautiful something or someone can be, or if it’s beautiful or not. Beauty can’t be erased because it is forever living. No person sees it the exact same way. No one’s definition of it is incorrect because it has many definitions. Beauty exists, and can be felt more and more ways every day of our lives.
