Becoming a mother is a life changing experience. Soon after having children, many women are faced with a very difficult question. Should I return to work, or become a stay at home mom? How does a woman choose between a career and family? Must the pros and cons be weight out? Everything has to be taken into consideration. Everything from past spending habits to present financial situations. There are so many things that must be considered. The world often frowns upon the stay at home mom, underestimating the hard work that goes into it. The working mother is commonly viewed as being ambitious and driven however, both of these women play an equally important role in the family. Although most mothers are faced with difficult decisions. The decision to stay at home or work will be one of the most difficult decisions a mother will make.

Most women would testify that being a stay at home mother has both its benefits, and its downfalls. There was a time, when it was expected for a woman to stay home. Cooking, cleaning, and tending to the children was part of a normal routine. The choice was virtually non existent. Even though things have changed since then, many often still fail to understand that being a mother, is a 24 hour 7 day-a-week job with no pay.It is a job that some may find overwhelming. Between maintaining a social life and tending to a family, it is a challenge. There are however, those that make it look easy. Whether or not it is easy is not the important factor. The important factor is the certain fulfillment a mother gets from this decision.

One benefit that comes to mind is the ability to bond with your children. Having the time to do those little, yet so important things like potty training, is a reward in itself. Structure is necessary with children. Not all daycares can provide the type of structure a stay at home mother can. Some parents have children that require special care. Knowing that the proper care is given, and to the standard necessary, is another reason mother opt to stay home. Not being tied to a desk all the time gives mothers the opportunity to decide how to spent their free time. Some stay at home mothers decide to further their education. Taking online courses or attending night school becomes an option. Others join social clubs, or become involved in church gatherings. The options are many.

Marriage plays a large role in this decision as well. The choice to stay at home is a sacrifice. Financially both parties must agree that the family is able to survive on one income. Things like savings and bills should be discussed and taken into consideration. Not everyone can afford to make this choice. Some families, (with this struggling economy, and prices on the rise) must have two incomes to make ends meet.

Having a career while raising children is a two- fold task. It is about being able to balance work ethics and motherhood. It takes hard work and a lot of dedication. Working mothers must seek out outside sources for child care. Finding a facility that meets both their financial means and quality of care standards can prove to be difficult. There are so many stories in the media today about incidents occurring in daycares that mothers are being a lot more cautious in choosing one. Before finalizing a decision on child care, mothers ften visit several daycare centers to see which one will be the better fit for their child. On occation, mothers have childcare facilities at the workplace, which is ideal.

Mothers who work are often on tight schedules. Dropping their children off and hustling to make it to work on time. For these mothers it often seems like there isn’t enough time in the day. It is important for working mothers to make sure their job provides both sick and personal time. Children who are sick are often sent home from school early. In this case it is vital that someone can be there in a timely manner to pick the child up. On both holidays and school vacations, schools and daycares are closed. This is another case where time off from work is crucial.

As one can see, there are many things to consider. Staying at home with ones children has so many benefits, as does choosing to work. However, with those benefits also comes obstacles. Time spent, finances, and child care, are all important factors in the decision process. One thing about both of these dedicated, and strong women is that they family is their foundation. As different as their circumstances might be, there is the one thing they will always have in common. That is the great love they have for their children.
